Flower Hospital (FH), a member of ProMedica Health System, is a 279-bed facility located in Sylvania, Ohio. FH's 1,500 employees are dedicated to a full spectrum of health care, providing comfort and care to generations of patients and their families.
FH's campus includes the hospital's Level III Trauma Center, inpatient rehabilitation services and surgical services; the region's leading oncology services; and senior and assisted-living facilities offered through ProMedica Continuing Care Services. Flower Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission.
The city of Sylvania, with a population of 18,600, is located in Northwest Ohio and adjoins the City of Toledo along Toledo's western border (See the Map). Sylvania is regarded as one of the area's choice residential communities, with all types of housing, including country estates, condominiums, apartments, retirement facilities, and individual homes.
Sylvania has an excellent public school system consisting of seven elementary, three junior high, and two senior high schools. The system offers college preparatory and vocational education studies, and continuing adult education programs. In the immediate area there are many public parks, numerous playing fields and tennis courts, two indoor ice arenas, four private tennis clubs, a natatorium and several outdoor swimming facilities.
The city of Toledo has a population of 313,619, making it Ohio's fourth-largest city. Toledo is known as the Glass City because of its long history of innovation in all aspects of the glass industry with several large glass companies having their origins there. Owens Corning and others have long been a staple of Toledo's economy. Other off-shoots and spinoffs of these companies also continue to play important roles in Toledo's economy.
Toledo had also been known as "The Auto Parts Capital of the World"". Several large Fortune 500 automotive- related companies had their headquarters in Toledo. The Big Three automobile manufacturers all have factories in metropolitan Toledo - the Jeep vehicle has been manufactured in Toledo since 1941. Employment in the manufacturing industry has been surpassed by jobs in the education and health care sectors of the economy.
Things to do in the Toledo area
The Toledo Zoo is consistently rated as one of the ten best zoos in the country. The zoo has wonderfully preserved buildings, as well as the latest designs that make the visitor experience second to none. Highlights include the Hippoquarium, The Primate Forest, African Savanna, Arctic Encounter and a Children’s Zoo.
The Toledo Museum of Art features a world-renowned glass exhibit as well as some of the most famous paintings, prints, sculptures and furniture in the world. The Valentine Theater - Artful theater beats in the heart of downtown Toledo at the Valentine Theater. This beautiful 900-seat state-of-the-art theater features art deco/Victorian design and provides a glamorous venue for several arts organizations and special events.
The Docks - The Docks has been Toledo’s place to be and be seen since 1996, and offers an eclectic array of cuisine from which to choose.
The Farmers' Market - Opened in 1832, The Farmers’ Market of Toledo is a place for area farmers to sell their produce and provide the community with a centrally-located place to shop for everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to live poultry.
Now run by the Farmers’ Market Association of Toledo, the market is a bustle of activity on “market days.”
The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio merged this year to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state. UT is a community built around eleven academic colleges and professional programs.
The University of Toledo Health Science Campus is home to UT Medical Center hospitals and clinics and many of UT's health-science research and education programs.
Attractions on Lake Erie
Put-In-Bay - Every year, two million people annually discover the magic of the Bass Islands of Lake Erie, especially Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. This two by four mile island boasts the nation’s third largest monument (www.nps.gov/pevi), named after Perry and an affordable, par three, nine-hole golf course plus several unique shops, restaurants and activities for all ages.
Kellys Island - Kellys Island, the largest U.S. island on Lake Erie measuring over four square miles, features amazing attractions and activities that make it an “Island for All Seasons.” Once you’re on the island, you can walk or rent bicycles or golf carts to experience many famous island attractions.
