Tucson (metropolitan population 989,500) is the county seat of Pima County and the city of Tucson (city population 520,100) is the second-largest populated city in Arizona behind Phoenix. (See the Map)
 Much of Tucson's economic development has been centered on the development of the University of Arizona, which is currently the second largest employer in the city. The University of Arizona offers 334 fields of study leading to bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. As of Fall 2010, total enrollment was 39,086 students. The University of Arizona College of Medicine which is one of three medical schools and the only MD granting medical school in Arizona. The university receives more than $600 million annually in research funding, generating around two thirds of the research dollars in the Arizona university system. The U of A is awarded more NASA grants for space exploration than any other university nationally. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, located on the southeastern edge of the city, also provides many jobs for Tucson residents. Performing arts theater groups include the Arizona Theatre Company, which performs in the Temple of Music and Art and Arizona Onstage Productions, a not-for-profit theater company devoted to musical theater. Broadway in Tucson presents the touring reproductions of many Broadway style events at the Tucson Music Hall.
The number of accomplished and awarded writers (poets, novelists, dramatists, nonfiction writers) in Tucson is too numerous to mention. Some are associated with the University of Arizona, but many are independent writers who have chosen to make Tucson their home. The University of Arizona Poetry Center is one of the leading academic sites for poetry in the nation and, in addition to its sizable poetry library, it presents readings, conferences, and workshops.

 Tourism is another major industry in Tucson, bringing in $2 billion-a-year and over 3.5 million visitors annually due to Tucson's numerous resorts, hotels, and attractions. In addition to vacationers, a significant number of winter residents, or "snowbirds", are attracted by Tucson's mild winters and contribute to the local economy. Snowbirds often purchase second homes in Tucson and nearby areas, contributing significantly to the property tax base.
Tucson has hot summers and temperate winters. However, Tucson is almost always cooler and wetter than Phoenix because of its higher elevation. In "Best Places for Outdoor Activities," MSN placed Tucson 5th in its "Close to the Big Outdoors" survey. MSN cited the city's closeness to outdoor activities, coupled with a balance of quality education, housing, jobs, health, and arts and entertainment. |
