About us and our location
Fairbanks, with a population of 35,000, is the service hub and gateway to Alaska's Interior and Arctic. The Fairbanks metropolitan area located in the Fairbanks North Star Borough is a vast area, which is the size of New Jersey with a population of 97,000.
Fairbanks has a diversified economy, with oil, gas, gold and coal mining, military, tourism, and the University of Alaska as key components. Its central location makes it the focal point for the tiny villages scattered throughout the surrounding wilderness, and the city is a staging point for North Slope villages such as Barrow and the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay (See the Map).
How to get here
As the service hub to the Alaska's Interior, the Fairbanks International Airport has frequent passenger and cargo flights to Alaska and outside destinations. Alaska Airlines serves the airport year-round, while Northwest Airlines serves the area during the summer. Fairbanks also has non-stop service to Europe during the summer tourist season.
Fairbanks is connected by road to Anchorage and to Canada and the US by the Alaska Highway.
Higher Learning and Research
University of Alaska Fairbanks is Alaska's top teaching and research university and the state's only Ph.D.-granting institution. With more than a dozen research centers and $120 million in annual funding, UAF is the research engine of Alaska, with a strong emphasis on understanding the challenges and opportunities of the North.

The Fairbanks Light Opera Theatre (FLOT) has been producing exciting and memorable productions since 1970. All the shows have big stage appeal and a live orchestra - known as "the Broadway of the North".
Fairbanks Concert Association has recently presented the most diverse and exciting entertainment in its 62 seasons in Fairbanks - jazz, folk, and classical music; tap, ballet, ethnic and modern dance; comedy and spoken word, acrobats, circuses and family programs; symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and virtuoso soloists; Celtic, African, and Latin music.
